Project Overview

The Geelong Racing Club (the GRC) undertook a project to build a new training grass track to provide additional options for trainers preparing their horses for racing. Daisy’s Turf Sand was identified as the ideal rootzone material due to its sieve analysis and excellent drainage rate.

The project required a substantial volume of Turf Sand (approximately 4,800 cubic meters), equivalent to around 200 truckloads. The main challenge was transporting this substantial amount of material during the wetter winter months.

Challenges

There were several challenges the team faced when planning and undertaking this project, including:

  • Product Specifications: The selected material needed to meet specific criteria, including sieve analysis and drainage rates, to ensure it was suitable for the training track construction.

  • Weather Conditions The project faced significant challenges due to its scheduling during the winter months, which brought wetter conditions that could have disrupted the logistics.

  • Quantity: The project required 4,800 cubic meters of turf sand, equating to approximately 200 truckloads for delivery.

Ensuring the right product was selected, with timely and efficient delivery within the specified timeframe was a critical challenge.

Solutions

The experience team at Daisy’s Garden Supplies were well equipped to handle the challenges:

  • Product Specifications: Daisy’s worked closely with the GRC team to understand their requirements and objectives. Turf Sand was identified as a rootzone material that would be suitable for the build with its sieve analysis and good drainage rate. Daisy’s provided detailed soil analysis and drainage rate information to ensure the turf sand met the necessary specifications. James Dalton, Track Manager of the GRC, stated that “obtaining soil analysis and drainage rates to make sure the product was not altering over the build was readily made available”. This ongoing quality monitoring helped maintain the integrity of the project throughout its duration.

  • Weather Conditions & Quantity: Despite the challenging weather, the team effectively managed the logistics by maintaining daily communication with the GRC team. Ryan Dunoon, Regional Operations Manager, ensured prompt responses and tailored solutions, while adjustments were made as needed to keep the project on track. As James, Track Manager of the GRC, noted, the challenges were “easily overcome with daily communication and Daisy’s ability to pivot and adjust with ease.”

Outcome

The project delivered outstanding results, significantly benefiting the Geelong Racing Club. By pre-winter 2024, the new training grass track achieved full grass cover, ready to support training activities as the season transitioned into spring. This development not only enhanced the facility but also allowed “the Course Proper a rest to ensure it is at its optimum for racing", stated James. The successful completion of the project demonstrated Daisy’s Garden Supplies’ ability to manage complex logistics and adapt to challenging conditions, reinforcing their commitment to quality and client satisfaction.
