Nothing tastes better than home-grown vegetables! So to make it easy for you, we’ll take you through how to build a raised vegetable garden, inspirations, and how to feed and care for your vegetables. There are many reasons to build raised vegetable gardens.

There is the satisfaction of growing vegetables yourself, gardening is great for your mental health, you have complete control over the growing inputs (fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides etc.) and soil conditions, and the bed height is easy on your back when tending your growing bounty and harvesting your crops. Raised vegetable gardens can be simple or elaborate, depending on your needs. Raised vegetable gardens can also be sized and spaced to maximize your growing area.

1. Prepare the ground

Pick a location for your raised vegetable garden. You can choose to make them a garden feature, or they can be placed out of sight but position the garden beds to ensure they will receive enough sunlight during the day. Then level the ground and cover the levelled ground to prevent weeds and grass growing up through the planter. You can use weed mat or if you want to use a material that decomposes, put down layers of paper or cardboard. Utalise our soils and composts to liven up your veggie garden for maximal impact!

2. Construct the planter box

Choose the material you want to use to construct the planter box. For example, you can use timber, railway sleepers, or corrugated metal. Daisy’s Garden Supplies have ‘ready to go’ planter box kits as well as a range of timber for you to construct custom raised bed.

3. Fill the planter box with soil.

The best choice to grow healthy vegetables is a rich, well drained soil. We recommend Daisy’s organic mix. It is a premium soil blend consisting of sandy soil, composted organic matter, and composted manure. Organic mix will provide a range of nutrients and other essential trace elements. It has good physical properties and it encourages soil microbiology and encourages worms. Fill the planter to the required depth but don’t forget to leave room for mulch. Check out our range of Planter boxes here!

4. Plant

Pick your plants according to seasons, plant them, water them and mulch. Use sugar cane mulch or pea straw mulch which helps to insulate the soil surface, retain moisture, and to suppress weeds
