What can you do with landscape rocks and garden boulders?

Landscape rocks are one of the most versatile materials in any outdoor project. Here are the three places they earn their keep most.

Retaining walls and terraces

Stack larger boulders and you've got a retaining wall that'll outlast timber, blend into the garden instead of fighting it, and actually improve with age as plants grow around it. Moss rocks and mudstone are particularly well suited to this - they weather beautifully. For timber retaining wall alternatives, also see our sleepers and timbers and railway sleepers ranges.

Garden beds and borders

A well-placed feature rock does more design work than a dozen plants. Use Castlemaine feature rocks or Coldstream rocks to anchor a garden bed, create contrast in a planting scheme, or mark a transition between lawn and garden. Smaller landscape rocks work well as natural edging that stays where you put it - or pair them with our garden edging range for a cleaner finish.

Water features and dry creek beds

Smooth natural rocks bring a level of authenticity to water features that manufactured alternatives just can't match. Beaching rocks and river stones layered through a dry creek bed look like they've always been there - which is exactly the point.

Choosing the right size landscape rock for your project

Small landscape rocks (100-300mm) are your workhorses - great for garden bed borders, pathway edging, and layering through planted areas for a natural finish. Pair them with stepping stones and pavers for a polished path design.

Medium boulders (300-600mm) make strong feature statements. Use them as standalone pieces in a courtyard, as seating stones around a fire pit, or as edging anchors in a front garden. Large boulders (600mm+) are for projects where you want genuine impact - retaining walls, commercial landscaping, or a centrepiece that earns its space. These often require machinery for placement, which we can help arrange.

Frequently asked questions about landscape rocks and boulders

What's the difference between landscape rocks and garden pebbles?

Size and purpose, mostly. Garden pebbles are smaller stones - typically under 100mm - used for ground cover, drainage, and decorative finishes. Landscape rocks and boulders are larger, used for structural purposes like retaining walls or as statement feature pieces. Many projects use both - pebbles as the ground layer, rocks and boulders as the anchors and features.

How do I know what size boulders I need?

Think about the job first. For garden bed edging and borders, small landscape rocks in the 100-300mm range do the work without overwhelming the space. For retaining walls and structural uses, you want medium to large boulders (300mm+) with the mass to stay put. For a feature piece in a courtyard or front garden, a single large boulder in the 400-600mm range often makes more impact than a cluster of smaller ones.

Do landscape boulders need any maintenance?

Barely. A hose down once or twice a year removes built-up dirt or algae. Moss rocks will naturally develop moss over time in shaded, moist conditions - most people consider this a feature rather than a problem. Smaller rocks used as edging may shift slightly over time and need occasional repositioning, but larger boulders, once placed, tend to stay put.

Can I mix landscape rocks with garden pebbles?

Yes - and it often looks better that way. Layering larger feature boulders with smaller garden pebbles creates the kind of natural, textured finish you see in well-designed native gardens. Use the boulders as anchors and focal points, and let the pebbles fill in around them.

Are delivery services available for large rock orders?

Yes. We deliver landscape rocks and garden boulders across Melbourne and Geelong. For large or heavy feature boulders that require machinery to place safely, we can help coordinate equipment. Get in touch with your nearest store to talk through what your project needs.
