In Victoria, walls over 1 metre high generally need engineering and often a building permit, and there are extra rules near boundaries or where the wall carries load (like a driveway). For anything over a metre, check with your council or a structural engineer first.

Concrete sleepers last longer, won't rot or burn, and suit higher walls — but cost more and are heavier to install. Timber is cheaper, easier for DIY and looks warmer, but has a shorter lifespan. For a low garden wall, timber is often plenty; for a tall structural wall, concrete wins.

In short: set your line and level, install the posts (concrete-footed for steel, or dig-in for timber), stack the sleepers between or against them, backfill with free-draining gravel and add ag-pipe drainage behind the wall.

For low garden walls, 200x75 mm sleepers are common; taller or load-bearing walls step up to thicker 200x100 mm or heavy-duty concrete sleepers. Post spacing depends on sleeper length and wall height — ask our team and we'll spec it.
