Lots of factors go into determining how often you should water your lawn, and the short answer is, it depends. Key considerations include how moisture retentive the soil is underneath the turf, how sandy the soil base is, whether there's been any natural rainfall, how much mowing you're prepared to do, and the pressure of the irrigation system or hose you're using. Correct watering is one of the main factors influencing how your instant turf performs, so it's worth keeping these environmental factors front of mind all year round.

Sir Walter DNA Certified turf is a highly versatile grass that thrives in a range of conditions, from full sun to cool, shady spots. While this means it can technically be laid year round, certain seasons offer better results than others.

Spring is generally considered the best time to lay turf, when temperatures are warming up and rainfall is more plentiful. In winter, aim to install in full sun and low traffic areas. Root initiation is slower and establishment takes longer in the cooler months, so keeping foot traffic off the new lawn is essential.

Laying turf in summer leads to fast establishment and growth, but daily watering during the cooler parts of the day is a must to stop the roots drying out. Autumn can also work well, since the soil is at a good temperature and rainfall tends to be reliable, though it's best done earlier in the season so the turf has time to establish before winter sets in.

Whichever season you choose, water your new turf within 30 minutes of laying it, then daily until it's firmly rooted. Fertilise the lawn around six weeks after installation.

  2. Lay the Base: Lay Turf Sand or Lawn Mix 100mm deep.
  3. Roll out the turf: Roll out the turf strips onto the prepared base.
  4. Water the turf: For the initial period ensure the turf is watered regularly.
