Sir Grange is non-invasive, making it a good fit around garden beds, and needs 50% less mowing than other varieties. Here are some common questions about our Sir Grange Zoysia.

While Sir Grange Zoysia typically requires less care than other grass varieties once established, it will still need a bit of ongoing attention.

Zoysia grass generally contains more silica than other varieties, which supports strong, healthy growth. To keep your Sir Grange lawn strong yet soft underfoot, avoid cutting it any lower than 10mm, never trim more than a third of the blade length in one go, and mow once a week to a fortnight, or as needed.

Thatch, the layer of decomposing plant material that builds up on the soil surface, can be more of an issue with zoysia grass, and it can stop sunlight, water and nutrients from reaching the soil. Whenever you notice thatch building up, remove it with a dethatcher or rake.

Sir Grange Zoysia is drought tolerant and doesn't need much watering. Only water when the lawn shows signs it needs it, such as leaf blades curling inwards or looking dry, keeping in mind that this will always depend on environmental conditions.

One of the major benefits of growing Sir Grange Zoysia in Victoria is that it typically needs very little fertiliser, requiring around 75% less nitrogen than other turf varieties. In many cases, it will need little to no fertiliser at all.

Sir Grange Zoysia is a slow growing, low maintenance grass that needs significantly fewer nutrients than other turf varieties, requiring only around a third of the fertiliser many other grasses need.

If you're installing Sir Grange for the first time, a starter fertiliser can be used prior to laying to help prepare the base and kickstart new growth. Unlike other instant turf varieties, there's no need to apply a slow release granular fertiliser around the 5 to 6 week mark after installation. Instead, you can fertilise your new lawn once it's established in early spring, and again in mid to late summer if needed.

Avoid fertilising Sir Grange during autumn or winter, aside from an application of liquid iron, micronutrients and ColourGuard to help maintain its appearance over the cooler months. ColourGuard is a UV and fade resistant natural lawn paint that restores colour to your grass, keeping your lawn looking green throughout winter.

Always water your lawn straight after fertilising to prevent leaf burn and other issues, and avoid fertilising when it isn't needed. Unnecessary fertilising simply encourages thatch build up and means more frequent mowing.

Finally, avoid mowing too soon after fertilising your zoysia lawn. Give the fertiliser time to be properly absorbed into the soil, ideally waiting at least a week before mowing. For best results, mow your lawn before applying fertiliser rather than straight after.

Remember childhood memories of playing on coarse, scratchy grass that left you itching long after you'd gone inside? You won't get that with Sir Grange. This zoysia variety is low allergenic with a soft, fine leaf texture that's a pleasure to walk on. That said, it doesn't cope well with heavy foot traffic, so it may not be the best choice for families with young children or pets.

For landscapers and homeowners alike, creeping grasses can wreak havoc on garden beds. Luckily, Sir Grange Zoysia is a slow growing turf variety that's generally non-invasive, meaning its roots won't intrude into neighbouring garden beds or borders.

Another bonus is that Sir Grange is low allergenic, producing few if any seed heads, so you're unlikely to run into major problems with grass invading your garden plot or landscaped areas.

If you do end up with grass creeping into your garden beds, perhaps because the lawn was left unmaintained for a while, there are a few quick fixes. Installing a physical border between your lawn and garden, dug to a depth of several inches, stops lateral runners from spreading through the soil. Keeping up with regular lawn maintenance also helps, since seed heads are often a sign of a stressed lawn lacking water or nutrients. A herbicide that targets grass specifically, rather than garden plants, can also do the job, though it needs to be applied carefully to avoid any overspill damaging your lawn. Alternatively, grass runners can be removed by hand, though they won't come out easily and the job may need repeating until they're all gone. Once cleared, mulching the garden bed helps prevent new shoots from emerging.

    One of the biggest benefits of Sir Grange is how low maintenance it is. Once established, it will require up to 50% less water and mowing thanks to its drought tolerance and slow growing nature. When it comes to mowing, Sir Grange can handle a variety of mowing heights and can be mowed quite low to achieve that bowling green appearance.
