RTF (Rhizomatous Tall Fescue) Grass is a self-repairing grass ideal for cool climates such as Tasmania, Victoria, cooler parts of New South Wales, southern Western Australia and South Australia.

It thrives in cooler climates, tolerates up to 50% shade and delivers year-round performance. It's soft underfoot and gentle on bare feet, forming a thick, even lawn with a lush dark green colour.

Its roots can reach up to 2 metres deep, offering better drought tolerance, though not as high as some other turf varieties. It's also self-repairing, with rhizomes filling in bare spots over time.

Yes, RTF is one of the most shade tolerant cool season grasses available, making it a great choice for areas under trees or alongside fences.

Yes, as a cool season grass, RTF can be laid year round in Melbourne, including through winter.

RTF benefits from regular mowing during the warmer months to maintain density, roughly every 10 to 14 days during peak growing season. In winter, mowing can be less frequent.

For optimal health, fertilise your RTF Tall Fescue four times a year, in March, April, September and December, using a quality slow-release, high-nitrogen fertiliser. The March application is particularly important, as it promotes deep root production ahead of winter. April and September feeds support key growth periods, while a lighter application in December helps top up the lawn without stressing it. Avoid heavy fertilising during peak summer, as this can put unnecessary strain on the lawn.

  • Year-round performer: Actively grows in all seasons, giving you a lush green lawn without winter yellowing.
  • Non-invasive: Won’t creep into garden beds like more aggressive grass species can.
  • Shade and frost-tolerant: Unlike warm-season grasses, RTF turf performs well with just 3 hours of direct sun per day. An optimal lawn type for cooler climates, it can withstand frost and even light snow cover during winter.
  • Drought tolerance: Superior resilience to dry spells compared to other cool season grasses thanks to its deep root system. Also displays better tolerance to heat.
  • High self-repairing properties: If your backyard is a stomping ground for kids or pets, RTF offers impressive regeneration for a cool-season grass in medium to high traffic areas.
  1. Prepare area: Clear the area of debris, vegetation and ensure the ground is level.
  2. Lay the Base: Lay Turf Sand or Lawn Mix 100mm deep.
  3. Roll out the turf: Roll out the turf strips onto the prepared base.
  4. Water the turf: For the initial period ensure the turf is watered regularly.
