Nullarbor Couch FAQs
Here are some common questions about our Nullarbor Couch.
Nullarbor Couch, also known as Santa Ana Couch, is a warm season couch grass built for dry, tough conditions. It thrives on sun and heat, and it's been bred specifically for the Aussie backyard, doing best with 6 to 7 hours of direct sunlight a day. Over the past 40+ years, it's been extensively researched, trialled and tested across school grounds, sporting fields and home lawns throughout Australia, with impressive results.
Once the lawn is established, switch to deeper, less frequent watering. This trains the roots to grow further down, improving drought tolerance and helping the grass take up nutrients more effectively.
For most of the year, Nullarbor Couch shows off an impressive mid-green colour that suits residential properties beautifully. As a warm season grass, though, it does go dormant over winter, and this is when you may notice some discolouration. How much it fades depends on the weather each season brings, as well as how well the lawn has been cared for leading into the cooler months.
A lawn that's healthy heading into winter will handle cold snaps better and bounce back faster once spring warmth returns. The good news is you don't have to settle for a dull winter lawn. Regular fertiliser applications paired with a product like ColourGuard can keep your couch looking green right through the season, giving your backyard a quick and easy makeover.
- Drought tolerant
Nullarbor Couch is a warm-season grass with high drought tolerance. This means it will require less watering, particularly during the hot, dry summer months. The bonus is that you’ll be saving on your water bills! - Hard-wearing
Nullarbor Couch can handle high foot traffic – so if you have active pets and kids then this turf type will stand up to the test. - Self-repairing
Another great feature of Nullarbor Couch is its rapid recovery from wear and tear. Its aggressive lateral growth habit means any bare patches will quickly grow over resulting in a nice, healthy lawn at home or on football and cricket grounds. - Ideal in full sun
If you’ve got a sunny backyard then you’re good to go! Nullarbor Couch shows best performance in full sun conditions – at least 5-6 hours of direct sunlight per day. For a more shade-tolerant variety of couch, check out TifTuf Bermuda turf. - Great all-rounder
Backyards, front yards, courtyards, sporting fields, golf courses, park areas – you name it – Nullarbor Couch can cover it! A great choice for both work and play, Nullarbor Couch produces an attractive fine leaf that is equally tough as it is soft – as long as there is no shade.
