A clean bedding sand (paving sand) goes under the pavers as a screeded bed, then a fine jointing sand is swept into the gaps. Don't use a soft fill or brickies sand as the bed — it won't screed or drain the same way.

Bedding sand is the flat layer the pavers sit on; jointing (gap) sand is the finer sand swept into the joints afterwards to lock the pavers together and keep weeds out.
